Abstract :
A recent trend in scholarship on 1 Corinthians presents the verb φορέσωμεν (taken as an aorist hortatory subjunctive) as the earliest recoverable reading, as opposed to the reading of φορέσομεν (taken as a future indicative). These scholars have appealed to the merits of the ω spelling in satisfying certain text-critical criteria. However, I argue that their applications of these criteria are flawed. Furthermore, I illustrate how scholars who argue for this reading fail to account for all the possibilities of why the ω spelling is present and thus fail to demonstrate adequately that this reading best explains all variants.
