In recent years, three issues regarding the sacrament of marriage have received the most attention by Polish theologians: The understanding of the essence of sacramental marriage, the meaning of the sacramental sign, and the connection between faith and the sacramentality of marriage. This article briefly presents each of them in order to show both the orientation of Polish theology in its treatment of doctrinal questions and its close dependence on magisterial documents. This gives a better insight into the Polish reception of Amoris laetitia, the promulgation of which has caused much discussion in Polish theology and has brought to light assumptions and conceptualizations that had not before been appropriately thought through. The apostolic exhortation was, of course, not only about the admission of divorced and remarried Catholics to the sacraments but aims to contribute to the pastoral care of married people as a whole, making the understanding of the sacramentality of marriage more comprehensible in a time of upheaval and secularization. More study and discussion need to take place in regard to the indissolubility of marriage and its theological, and thus sacramental, justification.
