Journal: Revue d'Égyptologie Volume: 70 Date: 2020 Pages: 95-121 DOI: 10.2143/RE.70.0.3288738 Abstract : The Allard Pierson Museum recently acquired an important cedar wood sculpture that represents an Egyptian female temple attendant in the role of the goddess Hathor dating to the 18th Dynasty (ca. 1500-1450 BCE). By Egyptian conventions, her gesture is remarkably unusual and appears to make an attempt to cover her breasts and genital area. The attempt is, however, unsuccessful, as the gesture rather emphasizes her female sensuality. Only a single comparable statuette, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), is known to exist, though that figurine is much smaller and later. The present article discusses at length the bases on which the wooden sculpture’s authenticity can be established. Le musée Allard Pierson a récemment acquis une importante sculpture en bois de cèdre représentant une servante d’un temple égyptien dans le rôle de la déesse Hathor datant de la XVIIIe dynastie (environ 1500-1450 av. J.-C.). Son geste est remarquablement inhabituel pour les conventions égyptiennes et semble tenter de couvrir sa poitrine et son sexe. L’effort est cependant vain, car le geste souligne plutôt sa sensualité féminine. On sait qu’il n’existe qu’une seule statuette comparable, conservée au Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), bien que celle-ci soit beaucoup plus petite et récente. Le présent article examine en détail les bases sur lesquelles l’authenticité de la sculpture en bois peut être établie. |
