Document Details : Title: Confucianisme en taoïsme in de late Tang-dynastie en de Wudai-periode Author(s): DE MEYER, Jan Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 82 Issue: 2 Date: 2020 Pages: 279-301 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.82.2.3287741 Abstract : One of the salient features of the intellectual life of the Late Tang and the Wudai periods (mid-ninth to early tenth centuries) is the conciliation of Confucianism and Taoism. In the works of literati, most of whom viewed themselves as 'Confucian', we find a host of detailed arguments in favor of cooperation between Confucianism and Taoism. The fundamental equality of both teachings is expressed or suggested in a variety of ways. Although it is possible that this philosophical synthesis was in some cases inspired by anti-Buddhist sentiment, it cannot be denied that it presented a form of pluralism that would become less and less evident as Neo-Confucianism became the orthodox teaching in late imperial China. |
