Abstract :

In the episode of the ears of corn (Mk 2:23-28), the mention of the High Priest Abiathar is attested by the Alexandrian and the Byzantine text-types, but not by the so-called 'Western text'. A majority of commentators consider the words 'when Abiathar was High Priest' as a lectio difficilior which should be retained. Nevertheless, if we relate this textual variant to the different textual forms of vv. 27-28 ('the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath'), a logic appears that could lead to a revision of this consensus.
