Abstract :
The excavations carried out at Ras Shamra-Ugarit fit the French archaeological policy in Syria during the Mandate. It is almost the culmination of a decade of activity (1919-1929) organized by the 'Service des antiquités' under the authority of René Dussaud. This policy on the 'question archéologique syrienne' will be applied in several areas: excavations, museums, restoration of monuments, training of local cadres, publications, and development of laws to organize antiquities. René Dussaud will play a decisive role in creating the bases of this policy and especially organizing the excavations in Syria, including in Ras Shamra.
