Thanks to this movement founded by Irish layman Frank Duff, Suenens was able to introduce into the Church three particularly important objectives: promoting the active role of the laity in the apostolate, the complementarity between the hierarchy and the laity, and the pentecostal understanding of the Church. But there were also certain limits to this endeavour. A solid theological base for Suenens’ view on the apostolate was missing. In addition, there was the considerable influence of Veronica O’Brien on his involvement in the Legion of Mary, and later on in his disengagement. |
