Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 131 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2018 Pages: 337-379 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.131.3.3285652 Abstract : The article provides a study of ten folios from St Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai, which contain parts of an early Syrian Orthodox liturgical collection, covering Epiphany, Holy Week and Sunday of the Resurrection. The manuscript was dismembered at some point in the past and four folios were used as fly-leaves for Sinai Syr. 233; four further folios are now in Bryn Mawr College Library (USA), while another two have been identified among the ‘New Finds’ at the Monastery (M78N/B). The contents consist of memre and soghyatha, the former being excerpts from Jacob of Serugh’s Homilies 53 and 54. Exceptionally for Syrian Orthodox manuscripts, indication of the different modes is given, employing the Greek terms. Following the discussion of the manuscript there is an edition and translation of the seven soghyatha which it contains; for the most part these are poems which have not hitherto been published. |
