Abstract :

We address the concept of a well-defined Johannine community, separate from the mainstream church and central to the composition of the fourth gospel. In so doing, we examine critical stances regarding the audience of the gospel, the esoteric nature of its language, its lack of reception in 'orthodox' circles and its dependence on its community’s context. We then call for a more restrained approach to the context in which the gospel was written, and a renewed focus on the explicit subject of the gospel: Jesus Christ.
