Abstract :
In 2010, two ‘collections’ of artefacts of the Scythian period (horse furnishings and weapons), belonging to the same archaeological sites, were accidentally discovered in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria (the central part of the North Caucasus). They have been published. This note seeks to clarify the details of the cultural-historical interpretation of these finds in relation to the rite of chariot burials. Another focus is on the question of the nature of chariot usage on the north and south sides of the Great Caucasus Mountains in the 8th-7th centuries BC. In Ciscaucasia chariots were the ceremonial mode of conveyance for representatives of the military elite. For the Koban-Tli population of present-day South Ossetia chariots had a symbolic meaning and were the part of their ideological beliefs.
