Fever with a unique focus
The medical history of a 30-year-old patient presenting with a fever after therapy with medicinal leeches is described. This treatment had been installed for venous congestion after bilateral breast amputation with reconstruction. Three weeks post-surgery, the patient presented with a fever and a painful breast with redness. A surgical exploration was executed and antibiotics were started. Aeromonas veronii was cultured from the pus and blood.
The initial prophylactic therapy with quinolones proved inefficacious because of resistance. A treatment with ceftriaxone was started.
