A 68-year-old man with fever, night sweats and weight loss
Melioidosis is an endemic infectious disease in Southeast-Asia caused by the gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei.
The medical history of a 68-year-old patient at the AZ Groeninge hospital in Kortrijk (Belgium) is reported. Disease severity can vary
from a chronic tuberculosis-like illness to an acute sepsis. Diagnosis depends on a positive culture. Therapy consists of a short intensive therapy of at least 2 weeks with intravenous ceftazidime, carbapenem or imipenem, followed by an oral eradication therapy of at least 3 months with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
