Document Details : Title: Spirituality, Truth, Mystagogy Subtitle: Introduction to the Episteme of Spirituality from the Teachings of Saint Teresa of Jesus Author(s): OFILADA MINA, Macario Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 27 Date: 2017 Pages: 127-141 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.27.0.3254099 Abstract : Teresa of Jesus is unsurpassed in the history of spirituality and mysticism because of her works and writings. This essay, departing from the notion of what is consistent and constant amidst the changing mystical phenomena, is an exploration of the process of the development of her spirituality which is expressed in her writings, deemed as mystagogical in as much as they break away from the confines of her intimacy and open up a path for all. All this explored by means of examining and applying the notion of episteme, amidst the changing and unchanging in the subject of the mystical exploration. Centered on Teresa’s writings and parting from them, this introductory study seeks a deeper and more consistent understanding of the notions of spirituality and mystagogy from the viewpoint of truth, which is not only sincerity or authentication, but the very notion that God or the Absolute graciously, whom Teresa calls the Suma Verdad, generously allows Himself to be experienced by man, thus forming the nucleus of mysticism which is the very root, underlying principle and goal of a spirituality which is necessarily mystagogical. |
