The present article suggests that they be regarded as a single unit. The first part is formed by what is currently looked upon as the 'baptism of Jesus' (Luke 3,21-22); the second part is constituted by what is usually and unhappily designated as the 'genealogy of Jesus' (3,23-38). The suggested interpretation changes the punctuation so that there is a comma instead of a full stop between verses 22 and 23 in order to avoid a series of inconsistencies which can be noted in the text as it stands. Thus the parallelism between John and Jesus is highlighted through the contrast between the beginning of the ministry of the Precursor and that of the Messiah. Jesus, like David, begins his (royal) messianic activity at the age of thirty, inaugurating the last and definitive ('the twelfth seven-year period') of the history of the world. |
