Abstract :
Radical orthodoxy is a theological sensibility that evokes protest despite having grown familiar over the past decade. This article’s main purpose is to acquaint the reader with this theological phenomenon. It will also draw attention to the work of radical orthodoxy’s chief proponent, John Milbank. Alongside Milbank’s critical genealogy of the secular, it presents his own theological vision. This article intends to show that, contrary to common opinion, his thinking is marked less by rigid, closed orthodoxy than by a quest for something that can mediate between God and humanity. Christian orthodoxy testified to this mediation in the incarnation of the Word. In Milbank’s thinking this is not so much a stringently demarcated truth as a mystery before which the theologian falters. Finally, the article links the tenor of Milbank’s theology with the view of theology in Erik Borgman’s opening essay to the renewed Tijdschrift voor Theologie.
