Abstract :

This article derives from a research into the development of religiosity within three generations of Roman-Catholic families. It relates the subject of faith in family life to two domains of research: the domestic area and the religious area. It clarifies that within both domains, generational and ecclesiastical patterns play an important role. Concerning the domestic domain, an increase of the affective meaning of family ties is noticeable: these ties become crucial in the need for warmth, nurturing, love and acceptance. Against the background of the ongoing isolation of the nuclear family in postmodern society, relationships of love and marriage become more brittle and fragile, which contributes to the significance of family ties. Concerning the religious area, the article describes a transformed significance of Catholicism, which originates from post-modern society as well. The opportunity and the duty to construct one’s personal life generate mainly fluid and temporal relations, resulting in a longing for an inspired and sheltering community. This causes a transformed significance of traditional religion. The religious-ritual framework and the religious-cultural value-orientation help people to deal with the heights and depths of their personal and social lives and enable them to partake in a collective, a ‘we’. This supports the argument of an ongoing significance of Catholicism, not only for personal life but for social life as well. The article explores the both critical and involved stance on Catholicism, adopted by affiliated and unaffiliated Catholics. It argues that such a stance reveals an unresolved catholic past as well as an ongoing longing for an inspired and inspiring Catholicism.
