Part II presents Bultmann’s sermon on Peter’s Miraculous Draught of Fishes (Luke 5,1-11), his only extent sermon on a synoptic miracle story. Bultmann begins by asking what a Christian miracle story is. He argues that we do not believe anymore that such stories tell facts, and so many people reject those stories. For Bultmann, believing in the historicity of miracles is not a part of Christian faith. Luke’s story about Peter is meant to show that we can understand this world as God’s creation. Part III evokes the situation during the summer of 1941 when Bultmann at a meeting in Alpirsbach gave his lecture on 'New Testament and Mythology'. Bultmann indirectly took issue with Alfred Rosenberg’s 'Mythus des 20. Jahrhunderts' in which the NS-leader polemicizes against the Christian faith, esp. against the theology of Paul. For Bultmann, the mythological expressions of Christian faith must not be eliminated or 'fixed' in an apologetical way but interpreted through an 'existential interpretation'. Part IV deals with Bultmann’s article 'Über den Begriff ‘Mythos’', which has recently been published for the first time. Part V gives an overview of Bultmann’s exegesis of miracle stories in the synoptic Gospels in his different publications. Finally, in part VI, it is asked why Bultmann never gave a 'systematic' interpretation of the synoptic miracle stories: according to his own theory, the evangelists had no 'theology' in a reflected sense, and so he saw no possibility for a theological interpretation of these texts. |
