Abstract :
Hospitality in present-day monasteries attracts visitors mainly because of its contemplative character, which also enriches monks and nuns. The article adopts an interdisciplinary approach based on monastic studies and empirical research. The concepts of hospitality and contemplation are explained in terms of Benedictine tradition. It presents the results of a study of 164 visitors to a German abbey, which show that they indeed experience contemplative hospitality, but that cognitively loaded experiences have less impact than spontaneous ones. A possible framework for deepening contemplative hospitality is joint liturgical worship, the core of monastic life. In conclusion the article advocates hermeneutic reflection on the spiritual experience of contemplative hospitality.
