Abstract :
This paper poses the question to what extent it is possible to find a Christological relevance in Gregory of Nyssa’s affirmation of divine infinity. It takes into account the passages in which the idea of God’s infinity is connected with Christological motives, in order to determine if the use of this idea by Gregory amounts to a significant shift in his reflection on the person of Christ and his salvific work. The conclusion reached is that, while Gregory is indeed willing to speak of the infinity of the Incarnate God, this idea is neither a fundamental element of his Christology nor an important polemical resource in his struggle with Apollinaris. Thus one cannot find in Gregory a real theology of the Incarnation of the infinite God, as has sometimes been suggested.
