Abstract :

The Dogmatic Constitution Lumen gentium is a key Second Vatican text. The article briefly situates the document in the context of Church History from the 13th Century to the present, then presents a few reminders of how the evolution of the conciliar work on the subject unfolded. It then looks at its troubled reception, and the divergent interpretations it sparked. Some key elements of the text are highlighted, such as the role of the Church in a secularized society, or how Lumen gentium can be put into perspective in light of Second Vatican hermeneutics. Finally, the article reflects on whether an ecclesiological renewal is likely, given the arrival of Francis, new Bishop of Rome.
