This article highlights the results of Fromondus’ biblical exegesis and focuses especially on his exposition of the Apocalypse. In his commentary, Fromondus espoused readings of Islam which were in most aspects representative of his age. Following in the footsteps of Joachim of Fiore, Peter Auriol and others, Fromondus interpreted Islam as the scourge of God, announced by the fourth seal in Revelation 6. In this line, Fromondus particularly elaborates on Mohammed and Islam as the pale green horse of Apocalypse, which, for centuries already, has afflicted Christianity with all kinds of calamities. In a debate with early modern commentators, Fromondus nevertheless refused to identify Mohammed or any of his successors with the Antichrist and could not confirm that the end of times was imminent. |
