Abstract :

A few coffins and mummy cases from the first millennium B.-C. show the rare iconography of half-horses half-snakes creatures. Previous studies, in particular L. Kákosy’s article, called them hippocampus. By gathering known and new examples, this paper enables to get back to that identification and to study the creatures’ origin and function. Snakes and seahorses from Middle Eastern and Greek bestiaries probably inspired the creation of this hybrid, which became an Egyptian funerary genius contributing to unite the ba and the mummy.
