Abstract :
The church at Qurnat Mar’ī in Western Thebes belongs to a small congregation of monks and is a typical well built example of a late antique chapel composed of a probably vaulted single-aisled rectangular chamber with sitting benches along the walls and an apsidal sanctuary in the east. Interestingly its original entrance was not placed in the western wall but at the western end of the north wall. During its history it has undergone several changes and several differently shaped rooms were added on all sides. Some of these rooms were later outfitted with loom pits demonstrating the way the monks had chosen to survive during the Arab period. At the end it became also a pilgrimage centre.
