Abstract :
Piet Schoonenberg S.J. (1911-1999) was one of the most prominent theologians to the last century. His dissertation was never published during his life-time. As part of a dissertation project J. Mettepenningen has published a text-critical edition, since Schoonenberg had to rewrite his 1948 conclusions; in 1951 he presented a new text. This final text is published separately. The publication of this first major work by Schoonenberg on the method of theology can serve well as the starting point for a reconstruction of Schoonenbergs chemin de la theologie, the development of his views on the task of theology. As the end of such a reconstruction the methodological reflections of his final publication are used. It appears that the decisions Schoonenberg takes in his dissertation – decisions that were partly responsible for the non-publication – can rightly be seen as the foundation for his later theology.
