Title: 'Men moet het volk zoeken in de schuilhoeken van zijn voorkeur'
Subtitle: P.H. Ritter Jr. en de amusementsliteratuur
Author(s): SANDERS, Mathijs
Journal: Spiegel der Letteren
Volume: 54 Issue: 3 Date: 2012
This article explores the relationship between literary criticism, cultural intermediaries and conceptions of citizenship during the interwar period by studying three texts by the critic P.H. Ritter jr.: his brochure De sociale beteekenis van de amusements-literatuur, an essay on Dickens and his novella Het verwijt. Research into both the textual features of these works and the institutional context in which they were produced indicates how Ritter’s middlebrow poetics and his views on the social function of literary criticism can be understood against the background of contemporary ideas about the critic as a cultural mediator.
