Boele van Hensbroek (1853-1912), who succeeded in becoming part of the Dutch cultural establishment of his day, can be regarded as a middlebrow figure, for instance because of his Der wereld letterkunde, voor Nederlanders bewerkt [World Literature adapted for the Dutch]. In this literary history, he tries to make world literature accessible for a mass audience for which higher culture is not very obvious. The book can also be seen as a kind of middlebrow literary criticism because it helped a broad public to become more or less familiar with the emerging academic discipline of comparative literary studies. The case of Der wereld letterkunde shows that this middlebrow literary criticism goes beyond the periodical press and broadcasting and that it also exists in a popular academic variant. |
