Document Details : Title: La Lettre de Mar Šamli à un de ses disciples Subtitle: Écrit inédit d'un auteur méconnu Author(s): CHIALÀ, Sabino Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 125 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2012 Pages: 35-53 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.125.1.2162439 Abstract : On the last pages of manuscript Teheran, Issayi 5, the copyist added a few brief texts after the Third Collection of Isaac of Nineveh’s Discourses, which occupy most of the codex. Among these short texts is the Letter of Mar Šamli to a disciple. The Syriac text and a French translation are given here. An attempt is made of placing the author Mar Šamli, who is almost completely unknown both in ancient sources and in modern studies, in his historical-geographic context. This is possible according to a Discourse concerning Mar Šamli by Berikišo‘ and several references to Mar Šamli’s teachings in works belonging to Behišo‘ of Kamul. These persons mention themselves to be Šamli’s disciples. Their works are compared with the Letter of Mar Šamli. Another name, with some biographical data, thus, can be added to the pleiad of authors of the golden age of Eastern Syriac literature. |
