Abstract :
Catchpenny prints containing popular narratives were the new mass media of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The media enabled publishers to experiment with adaptations of popular stories. In this essay, I answer the question whether these experiments were specific for catchpenny prints. Focusing on four popular stories (The henpecked husband, Punch and Judy, Jan Klaasz or imagined housemaid and Gulliver’s Travels) I will reveal that some adaptations were characteristic for prints, such as the endless variations on narrative elements or references to other popular media such as the puppet theatre. The analysis of these patterns of adaptation shows that the catchpenny prints had the same characteristics as oral media, on the one hand, and of printed media, on the other.
