Abstract :
In her article, the author answers the question as to why art therapy should be put into the focus of feminist theology by first looking at both as estranged sibling of the split parents 'art' and 'religion' (or 'Church'). She tells her own particular story as a student of art and theology who discovered art therapy as an exit from Marxist theories and heady theology in the 1970s, encountering well-established art therapists in Germany in the 1980s (Ulrich Stöveken, Maria Hippius, Heinz Deuser), and, additionally in the 1990s, studying a PhD-programme in 'Psychiatry & Religion' at Union Theological Seminary, New York; the latter included a training in 'Clinical Pastoral Education' where she co-worked with an art therapist in the setting of a psychiatric unit. In founding the new 'Scivias Institute for Art and Spirituality' in 2011, the author finally puts her own vision in which art, art therapy and feminist spirituality are intertwined into a good practise.
