Arab. 236) Author(s): MONFERRER-SALA, Juan Pedro Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 124 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2011 Pages: 125-148 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.124.1.2118192 Abstract : Christian Arab authors took over the Greek lives of the saints and martyria as well, adapting these texts into a celebrated genre among the Eastern Christianity. A good number of these adapted texts have survived through different forms, like in synaxaries, by way of Christian Arab translators. Our aim in the present article is to offer the edition, translation and study of an early MS from Palestine, which contains the opening of the account of St Anatolius’ martyrdom, a Christian of Persian origin martyred under Diocletian (Mingana Chr. Arab. 236). The fragment consists in a sheet, with an incomplete and undated text. Although the handwriting led Mingana to date it to about A.D. 950, the present author has attempted to give a new dating, at the time that he has traced the origin of through the linguistic analysis of the fragment. |
