Document Details : Title: 'Being Saved to Serve' Subtitle: Armenian Orphans of 1894-1896 and Interested Relief in Missionary Orphanages Author(s): MAKSUDYAN, Nazan Journal: Turcica Volume: 42 Date: 2010 Pages: 47-88 DOI: 10.2143/TURC.42.0.2084398 Abstract : This paper focuses on the ambitious involvement of the Catholic and Protestant missionaries in providing 'humanitarian relief' to the orphans of 1894-1896 Armenian massacres that ravaged the Eastern provinces of the Ottoman Empire. As the large number of unattended orphans generated an atmosphere of hopefulness and heightened visions for conversion on the part of the missionaries, during this period seemingly philanthropic field of orphan relief evolved into a major arena of missionary activity. The analysis of the discourse and characteristics of the missionary instruction in the orphanages highlights the intricate relationship between philanthropy and loyalty to the cause of proselytizing. The research based on the archives of the ABCFM, together with numerous missionary periodicals, correspondence, and memoirs, suggests that the missionaries privileged Armenians against other communities, preferred orphans against the other needy, and finally 'sifted' only certain Armenian orphans with reference to their inclination towards conversion. Situated at the crossroads of charity, missionary activity, conversion, and history of education, this paper delineates the interested nature and partial engagement of missionaries in the realm of humanitarian aid. Le présent article est consacré à l’investissement ambitieux des missionnaires catholiques et protestants dans l’«aide humanitaire» aux enfants demeurés orphelins à la suite des massacres d’Arméniens dans les provinces orientales de l’Empire ottoman en 1894-1896. Le nombre considérable et inattendu de ceux-ci provoqua chez les missionnaires des espoirs ardents de conversions, si bien que dans cette période le domaine apparemment philanthropique de l’aide aux orphelins devint un champ très important de l’activité missionnaire. L’analyse du discours et des caractéristiques de l’instruction missionnaire dans ces orphelinats met en lumière l’étroite relation qui liait philanthropie et loyauté à la cause du prosélytisme. Fondée sur les archives de l’ABCFM et de nombreux périodiques, correspondances et mémoires missionnaires, cette recherche donne à penser que les missionnaires privilégièrent les Arméniens par rapport à d’autres communautés, préférèrent aider des orphelins plutôt que d’autres enfants dans le besoin et enfin «filtrèrent» exclusivement certains orphelins arméniens en fonction de leur inclination à la conversion. Au carrefour de la charité, l’activité missionnaire, la conversion et l’histoire de l’éducation, c’est à la nature intéressée et à l’engagement partial des missionnaires dans le domaine de l’aide humanitaire qu’est consacré cet article. |
