Abstract :

The Maḥbûb al-qulûb, written by the Iranian Shiite thinker Quṭb al-Dîn Ashkevarî (d. around 1680), is an encyclopedia of the sages from Adam up to the time of Safavid 'renaissance'. The opus belongs to a long Arabic tradition of doxography, beginning with the movement of translation of Greek philosophy into Arabic. The first part of this article is meant to identify the doxographical works which are the sources and authorities of Ashkevarî, by retracing the line of transmission of the facts that he gives. Although these works apparently look like each other, three elements allow us to distinguish them and to find philosophical interest in them: the orientation of the thought which is inherent in the plan, the choice and the handling of the characters, and the concept of wisdom which is expressed by the author. The second part of this article, in which the composition of the Maḥbûb al-qulûb is exposed and analysed according to these three aspects, is intended to show the special place of this book in the history of the history of wisdom in Islam.
