A critical analysis of the two spiritualities leads to two main conclusions. First, those who embrace the dialogical spirituality of the Bible will probably not feel fully at home with Weil’s approach, imbued as it is with strong Stoic overtones and a view of God as silence. A relational spirituality is grounded in the conviction that what one prays actually impacts on God. The hope is that God will hear the lament and graciously respond. Second, Weil’s spirituality will have strong appeal for those who cannot embrace relational theism, but who nevertheless seek to maintain a loving orientation to God in the vicissitudes of life. |
