Document Details : Title: Textgeschichte oder Intention? Subtitle: Enkidu als wilder Hirte und Vorbild des Königs in Šūtur eli šarrī Author(s): KEETMAN, Jan Journal: Bibliotheca Orientalis Volume: 67 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2010 Pages: 269-276 DOI: 10.2143/BIOR.67.3.2057455 Abstract : In this review article the thesis is defended that the description of Enkidus early life in the Old Babylonian Gilgame texts is coherent, if we keep in mind the perspective of the people speaking and the 'carrier' of Enkidu. First Enkidu lives with the wild animals defending them like a shepherd. When he gets acquainted with the civilized world, his first work is defending the domesticated animals like the wild animals and then he moves on to defend the oppressed people of Uruk. When Gilgame steps away from the oppression Enkidu recognizes that he is truly a king. As a friend Enkidu is able to help Gilgame with the expertise from his unusual life. In all he plays the role for which he was made, like holding a mirror in which the king may see how to live like a shepherd of his people, but at the end he shows him even his death. |
