The author deals here with the taste for collection-building and with antiquarianism from the eleventh to the nineteenth century, attempts to assess the rôle that this played in creating the conditions for the rise of scientific archaeology in the 1920s, and finally tries to show how tradition weighed upon Chinese archaeology during its first decades. L’archéologie scientifique en Chine est née au contact de l’Occident au début du XXe siècle, mais sa gestation est le fruit d’un très long processus et de choix intellectuels que l’article tente d’expliciter; il aborde le goût des collections et la science des antiquités du XIe au XIXe siècles, tente d’évaluer le rôle que celle-ci a joué dans la naissance de l’archéologie scientifique, dans les années 1920, et montre en quoi son héritage a pesé sur l’archéologie chinoise à ses débuts. |
