Abstract :
After the armistice of October 30, 1918, about 12.000 German soldiers had to be repatriated from the Ottoman Empire. While this was organized they were interned in the Asiatic parts of Istanbul, in Kadıköy and Haydarpaşa. Thus the places of burial in Tarabya and Feriköy, used during the war, were inaccessible to them, and when first deaths occured among the men, a new burial ground had to be laid out next to the cemetery of Karaca Ahmed in November 1918. Burials ended with the departure of the last German Soldiers early in 1919, by spring of that year about 90 soldiers had been buried here. In the 1920s and 30s plans were drawn up to establish here a central German cemetery for soldiers buried in all parts of Turkey at this place. It was even suggested to move about 350 graves from various places into this small cemetery of about 1000 m2, but only about 30 were actually transferred to this location. In 1962 the remains of the 127 dead of Üsküdar were exhumated and reburied in the cemetary located in the gardens of the German embassy in Tarabya. The paper uses mainly unpublished documents as well as contemporary accounts to draw up the history of this forgotten cemetary. It also deals with the short-lived German military cemetery at Feriköy and other burial places in Istanbul.
