The most important evidence about the situation here in the Roman period is the Oratio Borysthenitica of Dio Chrysostom in which he describes his visit to the Greek city of Olbia in the late 1st century AD. Comparative analysis of this speech with the epigraphic and archaeological evidence casts light on the problem of the barbarisation of Greeks in Roman times and lets us draw some conclusions about the validity of Dio as an historical source. |
