The work of Ivo Michiels contains a lot of references to the cinematic medium, but some texts go further than that. In this essay, the experimental and intermedial qualities of Met Dieric Bouts (1975) and Een tuin tussen hond en wolf (1977) will be specified. Both texts are the product of an intensive collaboration with the director André Delvaux and both are intriguing examples of cinematic literature. The project Met Dieric Bouts combines an artistic documentary with a self-conscious reflection on the making of the movie. The creative process is represented in the film and in Michiels’s text. The experiment of Een tuin tussen hond en wolf is of a different kind. In this script novel, Ivo Michiels uses narrative strategies to integrate the aesthetics and pragmatics of the cinematic medium. In my essay, the interaction between film and text in Met Dieric Bouts and Een tuin tussen hond en wolf will be unravelled along these lines.
