Abstract :
The notion of translation is indispensable if one wants to understand the relation between Derrida’s and Heidegger’s thought: in a number of recurring themes in Derrida’s reading of Heidegger the problem of translation imposes itself on us. In this paper, I give an account of Heidegger’s conception of the term Übersetzung in the Parmenides and in Hölderlins Hymne 'Der Ister’, and I show to what extent Derrida’s questions with respect to Heidegger’s work apply to this conception of translation. In the first part, I show that Derrida’s comments concern the problematic nature of the distinction between an original and a derived form of translation. More importantly, they imply that Heidegger has not developed his conception of original translation as rigorous as he could have done: the orientation on the Greek origin of thinking prescribes the goals of translation. In the second part, I discuss the relation between appropriation and translation in Heidegger’s work, and I show how Derrida assesses the relation between that which is one’s own (das Eigene) and that which is foreign (das Fremde) that is at stake here for Heidegger. In particular, I show how Derrida proposes another perspective on this relation, namely from the alterity of that which precedes, and I show how this might give rise to another way of thinking about translation.
