Abstract :

This article explains how Lefort develops a strong justification for democracy throughout his works. The essential item in this justification is what I propose to call «the political condition». Although this condition is clearly explained by the historical and anthropological facts, Lefort’s reasoning in the final analysis is transcendental in structure. In a further step Lefort shows that democratic societies openly recognise, even institutionalise this «political condition», whereas pre-democratic (primitive) and post-democratic (totalitarian) societies offer negative examples: they actively repress this inevitable condition. Finally, this article situates the reasoning of Lefort in the Marxist intellectual context of France in the post-war years.
