Abstract :
This paper contains a critical Hebrew edition of the most important poetic correspondence that Solomon de Piera includes in his Dîwân. It is highly likely that Don Vidal Abenvenist, the great Aragonese poet and author of ‘Efer we-Dinah, and Solomon de Piera sent each other this letters at the end of the 14th or at the very beginning of the 15th century. The edition is preceded with: a) an historic-biographic study in which we point out that 'Abenlabi' and 'Abenvenist' or 'Benvenist' are the last names of two different families. After that, we can clearly distinguish between Vidal Abenlabi, the son of Benvenist de la Cavalleria, and his brothers-in-law, Vidal Abenlabi, son of Jaffuda, and Vidal Abenvenist, the author who begins this correspondence; b) a critical-textual study describing the magnitude of the Dîwân of De Piera, its manuscript transmission, its decomposition and the criteria used for its reconstruction, and c) a literary study of the texts of this exchange of letters keeping in mind the kinds of different “elements” or types of texts that form the letters and their specific functions; the organization and harmony of all of these texts within each letter, the inter-relatedness of the sent and received letters and the study of the correspondence as a whole. These letters are a tournament or poetic rivalry ambiguous enough for us not to know exactly if it was a literary game or if the reproaches and verbal attacks correspond to reality.
