It focuses on Geert Grote’s follower Johannes Brinckerinck who, in the second half of the fi fteenth century, has been the subject-matter of seven different lives in Middle Dutch as well as in Latin. By a close examination of the motives in these texts the author indicates that the corpus can be divided in two groups, respectively a more historical and a more hagiographical one. She also shows that Johannes’ portrait gradually becomes more hagiographical in course of time and argues that in particular the Latin text of the hagiographical group can be considered as a case of “hagiographical rewriting”. |
