For a considerable time, traditional manuscript techniques like rubrication and penwork decoration continued to be used for structuring and embellishing printed texts. On the other hand, manuscripts were sometimes illustrated by means of pasted-in woodcuts. In some fields, such as alchemy, the tradition of the codex continued until far into the sixteenth century. In the last part of this article, a comparison is made with the history of book production in the Near and Middle East, where the emergence of lithography offered a method to duplicate the traditional hand-written book by the press. |
