Abstract :

A large painting of the Čālderān battle (1514) is exhibited in Mirto Palace in Sicily. Beneath the war scene a long inscription in Italian describes the battle between Sultan Selim I and Šāh Esmā'il I, as well as positions and number of the Ottoman forces. This undated and unsigned painting is indeed a rarity and possibly unique in Europe. It is probably datable between 1580 and 1650, and can be attributed to the Flemish school. Why is this painting in Palermo? The archives of the noble families do not contain any reference to it. The most important questions are: who could possibly have an interest in exalting the Sultan of Constantinople in Palermo, and for what reasons?
