Abstract :

The intermediation of a basic structure of topographical knowledge to scholars and students is one of the main tasks of geographical instruction at school. The methodology for teaching topographical knowledge at school has developed and changed during the last decades. One method of instruction to accomplish this major task in an interdisciplinary and hands-on way is shown in this report. The starting points are terms of everyday language, which derived from geographical names like turkey, china, Venetian blind. The way back to the geographical roots of these terms should facilitate teaching topographical knowledge to scholars and students and to densify their basics for spatial orientation. The framework for this approach comes from concrete education fields and teaching issues of the Austrian curriculums for “Geography and Economics”.
