Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 120 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2007 Pages: 91-129 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.120.1.2020269 Abstract : This article contains for the most part the first German translation of Pachomius‘ 1st catechesis „to a spitful monk“. The editor of the Coptic text, L.-Th. Lefort, has shown that the text had incorporated a letter of archbishop Athanasius of Alexandria, and expressed his conviction that Pachomius himself quoted it in the course of his catechesis. However, the introduction to this article shows that most probabely it was Horsiese who incorporated the piece and wrote the last part of the rather lengthy exhoration. This is all the more probable as Horsiese was superior at the very place from which the spitful brother was brought to Pachomius originally. The catechesis may have been part of the local tradition of this plase, Šeneset, and been used more than one time in similar situations. The article is concluded by two appendices, one discussing the topic of the „two ways“, the other one connecting pachomian imagery of fierce demons of hell with the old Egyptian gods of judgement in „The Amduat“ and „The Book of the Dead“ with striking parallels. |
