Abstract :
In Western countries mortality is decreasing significantly since 1950 in both genders. This results in a gradual increase in life expectancy and in the number of older people. Few studies, however, have been performed on the mortality changes in the oldest age classes, 85 y and above. The mortality level at higher ages has important social consequences. The purpose of this article is to compare in this older age class the evolution of all-cause, total cardiovascular, stroke and total cancer mortality in a selected number of Western countries between 1950 up to 2003. Both genders will be studied separately in view of the existing differences in levels and evolution of mortality.
