Abstract :
Modernity has left us with an ambiguous inheritance, a world that is emancipated but one that has also witnessed the emergence of violent forms of totalitarianism. Post-modernity appears as the age of hopelessness that seeks consolation in unbridled consumerism. But it also bears witness to humankind’s relentless quest for meaning. That quest, as well as the possibility of its frustration, unites both sincere believers, who discover the abyss of non-belief within themselves, and sincere non-believers whose unbelief is the fruit of their struggle with God. In the restlessness of their questioning, the faith of believers shares common ground – and common cause – with the restlessness of those who struggle in and with their unbelief.
