Document Details : Title: Antiochos XIII, Pompeius Magnus and the Unessayed Coup Author(s): RIDLEY, R.T. Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 36 Date: 2006 Pages: 81-95 DOI: 10.2143/AS.36.0.2017830 Abstract : The end of the second great Diadochid monarchy to fall to Rome (the Seleucids) came in 64. Its conqueror returned to Rome at the end of 62 as the greatest general hitherto in Roman history. Contemporaries expected the worst of Pompey: he was Sulla’s leading pupil. He did not, however, follow his master’s example. Why did Pompey not march on Rome? Some three centuries of scholarship have provided an endless array of answers. The simplest seems adequate: he did not see the need. |
