This analysis is presented in section II below. Star clocks are, as far as the surviving evidence allows us to see, the most advanced expression of engagement with the star sky found in hieroglyphic sources dating to 3000-1000 B.C.E. and probably in any such sources as far as they are free from foreign influence. The star clocks are called clocks because it is widely assumed that they were used to tell the time at night according to divisions of the night into 12 parts or “hours” (wnwt). |
